State Fair Contest


2017 Contest Program Minnesota State Fiddle Contest at the 2017 Minnesota State Fair

August 26 - 27 -- Saturday & Sunday afternoons

3:00  p.m. - 5:45 p.m. at the West End Market Stage

Saturday, August 26

Age Divisions Each fiddler plays a waltz & a fast tune.


Junior (13 and under)

1st Place: $75

2nd Place: $50

3rd Place: $30

4th Place: $20

5th place: $10


Adult (ages 26 and above)

1st & 2nd Places continue to finals on Sunday;

3rd Place: $50

4th Place: $25


Young Adult (ages 14-25)

1st & 2nd Places continue to finals on Sunday;

3rd Place: $50

4th Place: $25


Open Division

-- Each fiddler plays a waltz, a hoedown, and a tune of choice.

All competitors in the Open Division advance to finals on Sunday.

Sunday, August 27

Age Division Championship Each fiddler plays a waltz and a fast tune (maximum of 5 minutes). (Saturday and Sunday scores are cumulative.)


Adult (ages 26 and above)

1st Place: $150

2nd Place: $100


Young Adult (ages 14-25)

1st Place: $150

2nd Place: $100


Open Division Championship Each fiddler plays a waltz, a hoedown, and a tune of choice. (maximum of 7 minutes)

(Saturday and Sunday scores are cumulative.)

1st Place: $300

2nd Place: $200

3rd Place: $175

4th Place: $150

5th Place: $125

6th Place: $100

7th Place: $75


Trick Fiddling

1st Place: $60

2nd Place: $40


Twin Fiddling

1st Place: $60

2nd Place: $40


Heritage Division

1st Place: $60

2nd Place: $40

Tell a compelling story about the fiddle tune and then play the fiddle tune on any acoustic instrument. Story can be about the origin of the tune or how it was learned or unusual aspects of the tune, etc.


Fee-Fi-Faux Division

1st Place: $60

2nd Place: $40

The musician will play one fiddle tune on any acoustic instrument other than a fiddle.


Gambler's Division

(if time permits)

Winner receives $75

Contestants will draw titles of tunes from a hat, beginning with the "easy;" then "more difficult" and finally "Challenging." Contestant is eliminated if he or she cannot play the title picked. Last contestant on stage wins the division. All fiddlers may enter this division. The winner is not determined by skill but by whether the tune is recognized by the judges.
